Perfectionism Has No Place in Small Business

Posted by at 23 August, 2009, 10:51 pm

This was a hard lesson for me to learn. I’m not sure I was born with perfectionist tendencies but if I wasn’t, school definitely gave them to me.  So much so that when I entertained starting my first small business, breaking free of them involved a lot of kicking, screaming and banging my head against the wall. :)

Perfectionism may have its place in school because you are always aiming for that A+ grade, that 100%, that shiny little star sticker.  But when launching something new as an entrepreneur it can be deadly.  Sure, we all want to do our best work and be prepared and serve our clients as much as we possibly can.  Those things are a given.  But if it causes us to stay on the fence and never really get out there then that’s when it can become a major
problem.

It’s more about fear than wanting it to be perfect.

One of the people I’m connected to on Twitter brought up this point recently when I tweeted about writing this article.  I absolutely agree with her.  In fact, this is why it was such a struggle for me in the past. The whole idea of “good is good enough” was extremely uncomfortable to me.  “But, but, but I still need to…I don’t think it’s completely ready to…I just want to tweak it a little bit more…”

Sound familiar?

Perfectionism in my case was just a form of procrastination. I suspect this is common, especially among first time business owners and solopreneurs.  After all, it’s hard to argue with wanting to improve your product, service, article, blog, e-course, etc.  Who wouldn’t want to? But we would be wise to look at what is really keeping us from taking action and going live.

Are you afraid that once you put it out there it might not sell and you’ll be disappointed and stressed over it?  Are you afraid of what people think because you are constantly comparing yourself to others and how you stack up? Fears and anxieties like these are all normal, but how badly are you short-changing yourself by not
jumping in and at least testing the waters?

The thing is, there are so many opportunities you may be missing out on by not going for it.  What if there are wonderful things waiting for you on the other side of your fears? The perfect time will never come, just like the perfect business doesn’t exist.

You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going.

No doubt this stuff is tough to overcome.  But like that oft-repeated tenet of being able to learn from our failures and mistakes, we can’t progress and improve if we don’t even give ourselves a chance.

By getting your product or service out there and knowing you’ve done a good enough job, you’ll start to see that momentum is on your side.  The universe rewards action.  Once you get this, you will wonder what you ever waited for.  You can always go back and update and improve but something is often better than nothing.

Many times just the awareness of how you use perfectionism to avoid the possibility of a negative outcome can go a long way toward re-training yourself to take action instead of obsessing over every detail.

So how will you overcome the perfectionist trap that may be keeping you stuck?  Believe that there are people in the world who need what you have to offer and stop holding back from them–and yourself!

Welding Used For Various Industries

Posted by at 22 August, 2009, 11:41 am

Welding is the most economical and efficient way to join metals permanently. Welding is very important for our economy because more than 50% of the gross national product comes from welding. There are different kinds of welding. Some processes cause sparks and others do not require extra heat. Welding can be done for various purposes outdoors, indoors and underwater, outer space.

Welders are used for various industry groups. Some of industries where welding is used is agriculture, construction, mining, bulldozers, cranes, material handling equipment, food-processing machinery, papermaking and printing equipment, textiles and office machinery.

Welding is also used in fabricated metals like pressure vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, sheet metal, prefabricated metal buildings and ornamental work. Welding is also used for transportation purpose like shipbuilding, aircraft, spacecraft, railroads, automobiles, trucks, buses, trailers and associated equipment.

Welding is also done for primary metal industries which include steel mills, iron and steel foundries, smelting and refining plants. Another group is the electrical and electronic equipment companies.

Welding is a fusion process, in which metal parts are heated to the melting point and fused together, usually with a filler of the same material melted along with the parent material. There are many types of welding processes like Oxy-acetylene Gas Welding, Arc Welding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG).

Arc welding is mostly used for structural steel welding. Electric current that flows through a high resistance air gap generates an intense arc with temperatures ranging from 6,000 to10, 000 degrees Fahrenheit. MIG welding are mostly preferred for industrial welding applications. The two basic inert gases used for MIG are Argon and Carbon dioxide. A mixture of 75% Argon and 25% carbon dioxide is also very common.

The shielding gas that is used in TIG is Helium. This process is considered most controllable and cleanest method of welding. TIG process can weld thin, light and dissimilar materials. Soldering and Brazing are the two most common methods of joining two metals. In Soldering and brazing, parent metal is heated and the filler metal is melted into the joint where it cools. Lead based filler metals are used in soldering and brass based filler metals are used in brazing.

Uneven heating and cooling in welding operations gives rise to significant residual stresses in the vicinity of the weld. The residual stresses and discontinuities in a weld have a significant influence on the fatigue life of a part. The fatigue part of a weld is often less than the base material. Residual stresses may be removed by annealing.

Welding is not suitable for all types of metals, as some materials, such as stainless steel can get cracks when overheated. Welding has become highly automatized over the last decade, and the use of welding robots is now common place in certain industries, such as automotive manufacturing plants

How To Get An SBA Loan For A Small Business

Posted by at 21 August, 2009, 12:33 pm
0

Many of our start up business clients at www.ethos360.com come to us with basic questions on how to get financing from the SBA.  There are a few things to have in your back pocket (and on the tip of your tongue) before going to them in order to increase your chances of getting approved.

1.        Know your business inside and out.

You will need a business plan that not only covers all of the details of your business idea, but is also devoid of unnecessary embellishment and hyper extended financial projections.  The SBA wants to know what you’re doing and how you’re going to do it.  Also, they want to see evidence that you are qualified and capable of executing the tasks outlined in your business plan.  The Management Summary of your business plan should detail your experience or at least the experience of the people you’ll have on hand to make up for any lack of qualifications you’ll have.

2.       Show that you have invested in yourself and your business.

This seems like an obvious requirement, but a surprising number of people come up against a wall when faced with this.  The SBA is not a zero percent down financing solution. You will have to show that you have invested a good sum of your own money, time and effort into the business in order to get the SBA to put up the loan.  The SBA will not underwrite 100% of the venture so this means that you will have to not only have collateral for the loan, but will be providing evidence of having previously invested at least 25% to 50% of the asking amount in the business.

3.        Understand that the SBA will examine your asking amount and prepare.

The SBA is very concerned and interested to know where the money you’re requesting will be going.  Being prepared with a breakdown of future spending along with brief explanations as to what the money will be used for will help the SBA determine the level of your asking amount.  Approaching a loan officer and just saying, “I’ll be needing $100,000, please” will not work half as well as illustrating in detail what that $100,000 will do such as: “I’ll need $50,000 for a new truck, $20,000 tenant improvements on a new office space, $10,000 for working capital, and $30,000 on upfront rent on an office space.”  Keep in mind that a business that has been in existence for more than a year has a better chance of getting an SBA loan than a start-up.

There are many more tips and tricks to help increase your chances at getting funding from the SBA.  It may seem a little daunting for a first timer to gather their ducks in a row, but there are many low cost ways to prepare you.  Small business coaches and mentors can help a great deal with putting together what you need to help your business get financing. Don’t be afraid of approaching the SBA, they’re there to help.

This is how you shut down an Insolvent Company

Posted by at 19 August, 2009, 10:09 pm

There are a number of ways to close your limited company if it is insolvent.

First however you must check to see if your company is actually insolvent as without actually ascertaining that you will not be able to proceed any further.

There are two basic tests.

If you can make out these tests then your company is insolvent.

Next you need to decide what it is that you wish to accomplish. If you want to close your company and not trade again then a company liquidation could be your solution. This can be achieved in two ways you can either wait for a creditor to present a winding up petition or of the company owes you money, you can present your own petition. This is known as a compulsory liquidation.

A more common route is to ask an Insolvency Practitioner to call a meeting of your creditors at which you will propose to wind up the company. This is called a creditors voluntary liquidation or CVL.

In order to do this, you need, under the supervision of the Insolvency Practitioner, to prepare a statement of affairs. This sets out your assets and liabilities, income and expenditure. It will show your losses and how you have come to be in this position.

It will make it clear on the statement that there is no chance of the company surviving and that it must be closed down.

Some creditors will turn up at the meeting, and may ask some questions. The whole process from preparing the initial statement of affairs, and calling the meeting, to holding the meeting will take about three weeks.

As you can se it is not a complicated process to close down a company, but if you do wish to take the favoured CVL route you will need to engage a n Insolvency Practitioner. The usual fee for preparing and hosting the CVL and undertaking the winding up work is about £5,000. This is usually paid out of the assets of the Limited Company. There are many Insolvency Practitioners around and it is always a good idea to speak to a couple before settling on one.

Cigar tobacco plays a great role in enhancing cigar’s flavor and taste.

When to Outsource

Posted by at 17 August, 2009, 3:42 am
0

Outsourcing is akin to a four-letter word in many parts of America. Jobs that could be held in the States are, instead, being taken by employees in other countries, such as China and India. It is making the idea of outsourcing any aspect of your company a bad one. But sometimes, in real estate, when you’re running your own business, you need to outsource. Fortunately doing so does not require you to find an applicant or company in East Asia. In fact, outsourcing for you will take you no further than Texas and likely no further than Austin.

But, first thing is first. When should you outsource? It’s not an immediate need. If you’re just starting out and have few demands from outside vendors or investors, you probably don’t need to outsource. Additionally, if you are growing at relatively moderate pace, which allows you to stay on top of and continue handling all financial and paperwork matters, you don’t need to outsource. However, if either of those isn’t true – if you can’t keep up with outside demands and the growth of your real estate industry is growing more quickly than a bad mortgage interest rate – outsourcing could be your dream come true.

Why? Well, for one. It will help make you a better real estate agent.

Outsourcing to another company will give you the opportunity to focus on the important issues. You’ll be able to pay detailed attention to each of your clients, searching for them to find the perfect house or commercial space. You’ll have the chance to research projects and determine how one client can renovate his home to make it more green while another searches for a house in foreclosure so he can buy cheap and flip the home quickly. You’ll be a more personable, relaxed real estate agent, because the company you outsource to will handle all the nitty gritty details.

How? By employing and training experts in the fields you need.

Many outsourcing companies, for example, provide certified public accountants (CPAs) who specialize in real estate. The accountant will keep track of your payment records and bills, and make sure everything that should be is in order. He’ll keep you from missing tax day in April and remind you when a former home buyer or seller hasn’t given you the money you deserve.

You may also find through outsourcing someone who knows how to fix the computer beyond kicking it. Specialized individuals in the hard- and software you use could be an invaluable asset. Today, the majority of records are kept online. Losing those records could be the end for you. But if you have no idea how to maintain your hardware, how can you be expected to efficiently back everything up on the computer? You can’t necessarily, but an outsourced employee would.

And there are many, many more benefits. Outsourcing may seem like a bad idea. You may be stuck in the concept of doing it all on your own, for yourself. But sometimes you need the help. You need to look at your business and admit: Okay, we’re too big, too fast. We need help.  And then you need to get it.

Interior Paint – Several Tips for Choosing the Right Interior Paints

Posted by at 16 August, 2009, 12:34 pm

Interior Paint – Several Tips for Choosing the Right Interior Paints When it comes to interior paint, if you want to give your home the very best, or if you are wanting to start your own painting business you may want to consider exactly which interior paints to use for your projects. As a professional painter I know the time saving value of getting to know your products. When you find which products work best for you and how they perform you will be able to turn your jobs all that much faster with less headaches. Below are some tips to help you do a professional job at home or on the job site. 1.) Which Brand to Use – Play it safe. Always use the best quality paints and primers. Don’t show up at someone’s doorstep with humdrum brands. Instead pretend you are going to be painting a multimillion-dollar home. Now what name brand of house paint would you choose? Interior Paint Not everyone may agree on the same brands of course. Don’t skimp on your own home either. After all, a man’s home is his castle! They only exception is if you are doing properties or commercial work where quality may not matter as much. 2.) What to Use on Interior Walls – I like using a “Matt” finish. Matt finish is a lower sheen than eggshell, yet very washable, very architectural looking. Benjamin Moore has a nice Matt finish in their “Regal” line that is super washable and won’t burnish when scrubbed. 3.) What to Use on Ceilings – the best interior house paint I ever used on ceilings is actually a primer made by Porter Paints called “Blanket” (PP 1129). It is basically a high hiding solid white block out primer. While nobody would even think of using a primer as a ceiling paint, this stuff works! It leaves a soft, pure white, flat even finish with no streaks or lap lines. You can tint it to whatever color you want. It also makes a great block out primer. The benefits to using this solid white primer on ceilings are being that it is a primer, it grabs to any surface. It dries and can be re-coated in just one hour and coverage is about 150 square feet more per gallon than regular paint. And spreads way better than the regular ceiling coatings. One last point is that you can tell where you have to roll on the second coat because the first coat over looks like a primer coat. 4.) Woodwork Paint – in the old days up till the early 90′s, alkyd or oil base enamels in the “satin finish” were the norm for woodwork. Benjamin Moore “Satin Impervo(r)” in the alkyd formula is still a market leader. Since the 90′s the government has cracked down on V.O.C.’s (volatile organic compounds) and some alkyd formulas may not be as fun to paint with as they used to be (some of the good stuff has been taken out of the paint). Fortunately Satin Impervo now comes in a latex formula that is so awesome I don’t want to paint woodwork with anything else. It feels and levels like alkyd enamel should. I also use their Fresh Start(r) All Purpose 100% Acrylic Primer 023 as my enamel under coater. Sherwin Williams also has a good alkyd enamel called ProClassic(r) Alkyd and their PrepRite(r) Classic Primer which is also alkyd base and is an enamel under coater (holds gloss) is also a good choice. Both are also available in a latex formula as well.

Lee Cusano has owned his own painting business since 1991. Since 2004 he has helped others to start their own business and make good money doing it right from the start with his several painting manuals. Please visit http://BetterPaintingTips.com for some free valuable painting techniques and painting ideas.
